Stranger Things returned for its second season in 2017, reuniting the hit series’ young ensemble cast alongside David Harbour and Sean Astin. Produced by 21 Laps Entertainment, the season leaned on computer-generated visual effects to expand its supernatural world.
SCANable performed detailed 3D scans of all of the main cast members — including Millie Bobby Brown, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, and Sean Astin — on location in Atlanta, Georgia. The full-body scans and modeling provided production-ready digital double data in support of the season’s VFX work.
Continuity measured in seasons, not hours
Episodic work is measured differently from a feature. A film needs a character to hold together for two hours cut in one edit. A season needs the same character to hold together across nine episodes, shot out of order, finished by artists working in parallel on different blocks.
That only works if there is a single authoritative capture of each performer that every episode draws from. Rebuilding a likeness per block guarantees drift — small differences in proportion or head shape that nobody notices in isolation and everybody notices across a binge.
One measured full-body scan per cast member, delivered once and reused, is the cheapest continuity insurance a series can buy.
Where aerial photogrammetry picks up
Terrestrial scanning is bounded by where a tripod can stand. Rooflines, tree canopy, quarry edges, and the overall shape of a location seen from above are outside that envelope.
Aerial photogrammetry covers the part of a location a ground instrument cannot see, and it registers into the same coordinate space as the ground data. The result is one continuous model rather than a ground survey and a separate set of aerial plates that nobody can align later.
Everything fires at once
A young ensemble cannot hold still, and neither can anyone else. Sweeping or multi-pass capture accumulates drift from breathing and micro-movement, and that drift lands as softness in exactly the places a likeness lives — the corners of the eyes, the line of the jaw.
Our arrays trigger every camera on the same frame, so the subject is sampled in a single instant. That is the working principle behind CyberSCAN™, and it is why the geometry comes back sharp enough to sculpt from rather than smooth over.
The scan outlasts the production
Cast members age. Sets are struck. Wardrobe gets returned. A measured record of how a performer looked during a specific season is not recoverable after the fact.
Productions that treat capture as an archive rather than a line item find the data still useful seasons later, for pickups, reformulated shots, and work nobody had scoped when the scan was taken. Everything ships through retopology, texturing, and render-ready builds so it is usable the day it is needed, not just the week it was shot.
