Kia’s 2017 “Robot Tested” commercial puts the Optima’s hands-free Smart Trunk technology through its paces, directed by Filip Nilsson for SKUNK. Produced with visual effects by The Mill, the spot showcases Kia Motors’ robot-testing campaign inside a stark, stylized testing environment built from a real-world location.
SCANable captured 3D LiDAR scans of the Pomona Fairplex Building set in Pomona, California, and created the white 3D environment model seen throughout the advertisement. The retopologized model and point-cloud data gave The Mill accurate geometry for camera tracking, set extension and CG integration across the spot.
Retopology is where a scan becomes art-directable
A raw laser capture is an enormous, unstructured record of every surface within range. It is accurate and it is inert. Nobody can adjust it, extend it, or hand it to a lighting artist and expect a result.
Retopology converts that record into a surface with intent: even quad flow, edges that follow the architecture rather than the sampling pattern, and a polygon count a shot can afford. Once the geometry is structured, it can be pushed — a wall lengthened, a bay repeated, a doorway removed — without losing the proportions that made it convincing.
That is the difference between owning measurements of a building and owning a model of it. Our modeling and retopology stage is the whole of that conversion.
Backgrounds carry more of the shot than they get credit for
Nobody watches a commercial for the room. But the room is what tells the eye how large the product is, how far away the camera is, and whether the space is a real place or a rendering.
A stylised white environment makes this harder, not easier. Stripping out colour and texture removes every cue except form, so the form has to be exactly right. Any error in proportion has nothing left to hide behind.
Starting from a measured structure means the abstraction is built on something true. The set reads as a place that has been simplified rather than a shape that has been invented.
Controlled camera moves want controlled geometry
A spot built around mechanical precision draws attention to precision generally. Long, deliberate camera moves through a large interior give the viewer time to check the parallax, and parallax is unforgiving of geometry that is close but not correct.
Solves constrained by measured dimensions stay locked across the length of those moves. Elements added into the space keep their scale as the camera travels, because the space itself is dimensionally honest.
Capturing an industrial structure of this kind sits closer to as-built survey work than to conventional location scanning, and both disciplines feed the same delivery.
