“It’s Not Over” is a 2015 Fox Sports spot for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, its stadium stands filled with computer-generated crowds by VFX studio a52. Moving between stadium and street scenes, the commercial builds anticipation for the tournament on a truly cinematic scale.
SCANable performed terrestrial LiDAR scanning of the stadium and street locations and built detailed 3D meshes from the resulting point-cloud data. The visual effects team at a52 used that data to populate the stands with CG crowds and to support stadium replacements, lighting, and camera tracking — laser scanning that let digital audiences sit convincingly inside real-world architecture.
Filling a stand with people who were never there
A tournament promo needs a full stadium. Nobody books forty thousand extras for a thirty-second spot.
Digital crowds close the gap, and the failure mode is well documented: every individual figure looks fine, and the crowd as a whole looks wrong. That is almost never a character problem. It is a placement problem — people sitting at implausible heights, rows that do not follow the real rake of the stand, bodies occupying space the seating does not physically contain.
A crowd system is only ever as convincing as the surfaces it is told to populate.
From point cloud to a mesh a crowd system can stand on
A point cloud is a measurement. It is not something an animation system can place agents on.
Turning one into usable geometry means reconstructing continuous surfaces from the returns, resolving the repeating structure of tiers, aisles and stairs, and simplifying down to a mesh light enough that thousands of instances can be scattered across it and rendered in reasonable time.
That conversion is where a lot of the value is added. The scan proves the shape; the mesh is what production actually works with. Set and location scanning covers both halves of it.
Two locations, one spot
Cutting between a stadium and a street means two entirely different capture problems inside the same job.
A bowl is a large, enclosed, geometrically repetitive volume that has to be surveyed from a limited number of viable positions, where an error that is negligible at one end becomes visible at the other. A street is open, linear, full of moving obstructions, and constrained by whatever access hours were negotiated.
They also have to end up compatible — same units, same conventions, same standard of accuracy — so one VFX team can move between them without re-learning the data. Consistency across locations is a decision made at capture. It is not a property scan data has on its own.
