‘Face Off’ is Nissan’s FIFA World Cup 2014 commercial, a stadium-scale spot with visual effects by Furia Digital. Timed to the world’s biggest football tournament, the advertisement relied on computer-generated crowds and digital stadium extensions to fill its stands.
SCANable provided LiDAR and 3D laser scanning of the StubHub Center stadium, delivering data used for CG crowd population, camera tracking, and stadium extension. The scan data gave the VFX team an accurate digital model of the venue, keeping every composited shot grounded in real-world geometry.
A digital crowd fails on placement before it fails on detail
Crowd systems are good. What breaks a stadium shot is almost never the quality of the individual figures — it is where they sit.
Seating geometry defines everything: the rake of each tier, row spacing, the height of each seat above the pitch, the curvature of the bowl. Get those wrong and thousands of well-rendered people stand at the wrong height, at the wrong distance, facing slightly the wrong way. The eye reads the pattern as artificial long before it examines any single figure.
Scanning the real venue supplies that lattice directly. Our set and location scanning is what a crowd system populates.
Set extension lives or dies at the seam
An extended stadium is two things joined: the photographed structure and the modeled continuation of it. The audience only ever looks at the join.
When the continuation is modeled outward from measured point-cloud geometry, it inherits the real structure’s dimensions, rake angle, and curvature, so the seam falls on geometry that already agrees. When it is modeled from photographs and judged by eye, the two halves diverge subtly, and the divergence gets worse the further the extension runs.
Measured beats sculpted, and it is not close
A skilled modeler can build a convincing stadium from reference photographs. The result will look like a stadium. It will not be that stadium.
The gap appears the moment CG has to interact with plate photography — a camera move that reveals parallax, a shadow falling across a real surface, a composite edge that has to line up on a real handrail. Those are measurement problems, and no amount of modeling skill substitutes for having the measurement.
That is the argument for scanning early. It costs a day and removes an entire class of downstream correction, before anything reaches modeling and delivery.
