Spenser Confidential is a 2020 Netflix mystery film directed by Peter Berg and starring Mark Wahlberg. Based on the novel Wonderland by Ace Atkins and the Spenser character created by Robert B. Parker, with a screenplay by Sean O’Keefe and Brian Helgeland, the film also stars Winston Duke, Post Malone, Alan Arkin, Iliza Shlesinger, Bokeem Woodbine, Cassie Ventura, and Donald Cerrone. Released March 6, 2020, it marks the fifth collaboration between Wahlberg and Berg after Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, Patriots Day, and Mile 22.
SCANable performed a 3D body scan of Mark Wahlberg and scanned several sets for the production, delivering measured geometry and digital assets used in support of the film’s visual effects and set-extension work.
Tracking software needs something true to hold
Camera tracking software solves for a camera path by finding features in the image. On a clean, textured, well-lit interior that works. On a night exterior, in rain, with a moving handheld camera and half the frame in shadow, it produces a solution that is plausible and wrong.
The fix is not a better solver. It is a measured record of the space the camera moved through. Given real geometry, a matchmove artist can lock the solve to actual surfaces rather than to whatever contrast the image happened to offer.
That is one of the least visible uses of set and location scanning, and one of the most frequently requested — the deliverable is not a shot, it is the thing that makes other shots possible.
Digital work inside a film that shot real
Grounded crime films tend to shoot real: real streets, real vehicles, real stunt work, practical squibs and impacts. Digital work then extends what was staged rather than replacing it.
That is a harder integration than pure CG, because the practical element in frame is the control sample. A digital extension sitting next to real photography is judged against it directly, in the same exposure, with the same lens distortion and the same grain.
Measured geometry is what allows the extension to inherit the plate’s perspective instead of approximating it. Where the two meet, nothing has to be blended away.
One capture, several departments
A body scan of a lead is rarely commissioned for a single shot. The same asset ends up supporting stunt replacement, a wardrobe fix, a background pass, and whatever the edit turns out to need three months after the unit wrapped.
Which is the practical argument for capturing while the performer is available and in the film’s physical condition, rather than reconstructing later from stills. Photogrammetric capture takes minutes on the day; the alternative is weeks of modelling that will never fully match.
The captured data goes out through modeling and asset preparation so each department receives it in a form it can use immediately.
