Death and Other Details is a Hulu mystery drama series starring Mandy Patinkin and Violett Beane, which premiered on January 16, 2024. Created by Heidi Cole McAdams and Mike Weiss, the ten-episode series follows Imogene Scott, who becomes the prime suspect in a locked-room murder aboard a luxury ocean liner and works with Rufus Cotesworth, the self-styled world’s greatest detective, to solve it.
SCANable provided 3D scanning for the production, capturing actors and set environments as high-resolution photogrammetry data. Our scans supported the series’ visual effects with camera tracking, digital doubles, and CG background and environment work — keeping the show’s shipboard world seamless on screen.
Photographs record appearance, not dimension
A standing set has a finite life. It is built, shot, and struck, and after that the only version of it that exists is whatever was recorded while it stood.
Continuity stills record how a set looked. They do not record how large it was, how far apart two walls sat, or where the ceiling really ran. A measured scan records all three, and that is the difference between answering a question in post and estimating an answer. Capture on the day costs a fraction of an hour. Needing the set after it is gone costs a rebuild.
A locked-room mystery is a spatial argument
A story about who could have been where, and when, depends entirely on the audience accepting the geography of the vessel.
That geography has to hold across corridors, decks and cabins that were almost certainly not built adjacent to one another. Measuring each and registering them into a single coordinate space gives layout one consistent ship to work with, and keeps sightlines, distances and travel times honest when the edit connects spaces that were never physically connected.
Exteriors that were never there
A vessel at sea is largely a digital proposition. Whatever the practical build covers, everything past it — hull, upper decks, horizon, water — is added.
Those additions are modeled outward from the practical build, which is only reliable when the build itself has been measured. Set and location scanning supplies that base geometry, and digital doubles populate the parts of the ship no one could actually stand on.
Every cabin looks like every other cabin
Repeating architecture is a specific problem for camera tracking. A matchmove solve depends on finding distinguishable features, and a ship interior offers rows of identical doors, identical paneling and identical fittings.
A measured point cloud removes the ambiguity, because the solve is constrained to real geometry rather than relying on the image to tell one corridor from the next. It is the difference between a track that locks immediately and one an artist fights for a day. That is why photogrammetric cyberscanning and terrestrial LiDAR belong on the same call sheet: one records the people, the other records the volume they move through, and both land in the same coordinate space.
