Family Switch is a 2023 Netflix fantasy comedy directed by McG, starring Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms in a family-wide body-swap story. Written by Adam Sztykiel and Victoria Strouse and based on Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s 2010 children’s book Bedtime for Mommy, the film follows multiple members of the same family who swap bodies. It was released by Netflix on November 30, 2023, drawing negative reviews from critics.

SCANable provided 3D scanning for the production, capturing cast members and environments as high-resolution photogrammetric data. Our scans supported the film’s CG and visual effects work with accurate digital doubles and background environment capture.

Measured geometry beats sculpted-from-reference

A modeler working from photographs is solving an underdetermined problem. Lens distortion, unknown focal lengths, and the absence of any scale reference mean a likeness can be built that looks correct in one view and wrong from every other.

A scan removes the guesswork. The proportions are measured, the scale is real, and the asset is right from every angle because it was never inferred in the first place.

That matters most in a story where the same performers have to be believable in more than one physical configuration. The audience already knows these faces. Any deviation registers instantly, even when nobody can articulate what changed.

Every camera fires at once

Nobody holds perfectly still. A capture method that sweeps around a subject, or takes several passes and merges them, records a person who was breathing, blinking, and shifting weight the whole time.

The result is soft geometry, and it is softest exactly where it matters: around the eyes, the mouth, and the fine structure of the face.

Our arrays fire simultaneously. The subject is recorded in one instant, so there is no drift to correct downstream and no manual cleanup quietly eroding the likeness. Our Mobile CyberSCAN™ Studios bring that setup to the production rather than asking a cast to travel to a facility.

Delivering to the vendor’s specification

A raw scan is not an asset. It is millions of unstructured triangles with no usable topology, no sensible UV layout, and no relationship to whatever naming convention the show has settled on.

What a VFX vendor actually needs is a retopologized mesh that deforms properly, texture space laid out for the way the asset will be used, and files named so they drop into an existing pipeline without a conversation.

That final step is where scan data becomes production data. Our modeling and asset preparation work covers it, so the delivery a vendor receives is ready to rig, light, and render rather than ready to be cleaned up.
