Focker-In-Law is Universal Pictures’ comedy from writer-director John Hamburg, the fourth Fockers film, opening in US theaters on November 25, 2026. The sequel to Little Fockers (2010) brings back Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Blythe Danner, and Teri Polo, with Ariana Grande joining the cast; Paramount Pictures releases the film in international markets.

SCANable supported the production with high-precision 3D scanning and photogrammetric capture across key sets and character-driven scenes, enabling the visual effects team to accurately recreate environments and generate digital doubles. By capturing detailed geometry, scale reference, and texture data, SCANable helped ensure seamless integration between practical performances and VFX enhancements — supporting the film’s signature comedic moments with grounded, believable visuals as the next generation of the Focker family collides on screen.

The physical object is the master

When a prop is going to be duplicated, extended, destroyed, or handed to a digital double, the physical object is not a starting point for the CG version. It is the specification.

Prop scanning captures the real thing at real scale — the proportions the property department actually built, the wear on the surface, the way a handle sits in a hand. A modeler working from a set of reference photographs is reconstructing all of that by inference, and the inference is usually close enough to look fine alone and wrong beside the practical original.

The same reasoning applies to picture vehicles. A car that appears both practically and digitally in the same sequence has to be one object, not two similar ones.

Scale and coordinates across a shooting schedule

The least visible part of scanning is the part that most often causes trouble downstream: agreeing what one unit means and where the origin sits, and then never deviating from it.

A feature shoots for months. Sets are captured on different days, sometimes in different facilities, by different crews. If each capture establishes its own scale or its own up-axis, someone in post spends a week reconciling them, and every reconciliation is a chance to introduce error.

We fix the convention at the start and hold it across every asset — sets, props, vehicles, and people — so a performer scanned in week one drops into a room scanned in week nine with nothing to adjust.

Comedy needs its effects to be invisible

A joke lands on timing. Anything that pulls the audience’s attention to the mechanics of a shot competes with the performance.

That makes invisible effects work unusually demanding, because there is no spectacle to distract from an imperfect composite. A set extension that would pass unnoticed in an action sequence gets studied in a two-shot where the audience is waiting for a line.

Geometry that came from set and location scanning matches the practical build at the seam because it shares the practical build’s dimensions. That is what makes the addition disappear rather than merely blend.

Delivery into the pipeline

Scan data earns its keep at the point it is handed over. Everything ships after retopology, UV layout, and render-ready builds, alongside digital doubles prepared to the vendor’s naming and topology spec.
