I Know This Much Is True is an HBO miniseries starring Mark Ruffalo in the double role of identical twin brothers Dominick and Thomas Birdsey. Based on the novel of the same name and directed by Derek Cianfrance, the series was ordered in October 2018 and premiered on HBO on May 10, 2020.

SCANable provided 3D body scanning for lead actor Mark Ruffalo, capturing high-resolution photogrammetric data as the basis for the digital-double work in the miniseries’ visual effects pipeline.

Face replacement is the strictest test a scan gets

Most digital work benefits from distance, motion, or darkness. Face replacement gets none of that. It is judged in a lit close-up, on a face the audience has been watching for hours, at a scale where a millimetre of error in the brow or the corner of the mouth reads immediately as wrong.

That is the bar a scan intended for face work has to clear. Not “close enough to sculpt from” — dimensionally correct, with the asymmetries intact. Real faces are not symmetrical, and the small irregularities that a modeller would smooth out are exactly the ones the eye uses to recognise a person.

Measured capture keeps them. That is the whole argument for cyberscanning over reference-and-sculpt on this kind of material.

When one performer plays two people

A dual role puts the same actor on both sides of a conversation, which means the two performances are combined into a single frame and the audience is comparing them directly.

Anything the two versions do not share — proportion, posture, the exact width of a jaw — becomes a discrepancy the viewer can see without being able to name it. A single accurate capture of the performer gives every downstream department the same starting geometry, so the differences between the two characters stay deliberate rather than accidental.

The output of that is a digital double built from measurement rather than interpretation.

Stillness is the part nobody can deliver

Capture methods that sweep across a subject, or take several passes and merge them, assume the subject holds position throughout. Nobody does. Breathing alone is enough to move a chest, a shoulder line, and the soft tissue of a face between the first frame and the last.

The result is not an obvious failure. It is a quiet softening of exactly the detail that likeness depends on, followed by manual cleanup that erodes it further.
