Michael is a 2026 biographical drama directed by Antoine Fuqua for Lionsgate Films that chronicles the life and legacy of Michael Jackson — from his early days with the Jackson 5 to his rise as one of the most influential entertainers in history. Starring Jaafar Jackson, the film blends iconic performances with an intimate look at the artist’s creative drive and personal journey.
SCANable supported the production by delivering high-resolution 3D scanning and photogrammetric capture, documenting detailed environments and human reference data to help visual effects teams recreate performances, build digital doubles, and enhance key scenes with cinematic realism.
Venues remodeled out of existence
A biopic that spans decades is asked to show venues, streets, and interiors that have been remodeled, demolished, or repurposed since the events it depicts.
Period reconstruction is therefore a research problem answered with geometry. Whatever survives — a building that still stands, a stage that was rebuilt, a practical set constructed for the film — becomes the measured anchor, and everything else is extended outward from it at the same scale.
The value of measuring the surviving element is that it fixes the proportions of the reconstruction. A digital auditorium built from photographs alone will be plausible and slightly wrong in a way that is difficult to diagnose and easy to feel. One built outward from measured environment capture is wrong nowhere.
Relightable skin under stage light
Performance footage is lit hard, from many angles, and it changes constantly. A digital double that carries baked-in lighting from the day it was scanned cannot survive that.
The answer is to separate what the surface is from how it was lit. Cross-polarized photography suppresses specular reflection and yields a clean diffuse response — the actual albedo of skin, hair, and fabric. A second, unpolarized pass records the specular component that polarization removed.
Delivered together, those give a lighting artist a relightable asset rather than a photograph wrapped around a mesh. It can be placed under a hard key, a follow spot, or a wash of colored light and respond the way real skin does. That is what photometric capture is for.
Likeness is the whole assignment
On most productions a digital double is a means to an end. On a film about one of the most recognized faces of the twentieth century, likeness is the subject itself.
Audiences carry an extremely precise mental model of a figure that famous. There is no margin in which a double is “close enough”, because the comparison is not against another shot in the film — it is against decades of footage the viewer has already seen.
Measurement is the only defensible route to that standard. Our cyberscanning arrays fire every camera in the same instant, so the geometry is a record of the performer rather than an artist’s interpretation of one.
