Sugar is a streaming series starring Colin Farrell, a stylized noir whose cinematic world leans on seamless, understated visual effects. Blending practical photography with digital enhancement, the show maintains both authenticity and visual innovation without disrupting its noir aesthetic.
SCANable contributed 3D scanning and photogrammetric capture to the production, digitally documenting actors, vehicles, and key environments with precision. These high-resolution assets gave the VFX teams the foundation for realistic digital doubles, detailed set recreations, and enhanced action sequences — subtle but impactful support that elevated the storytelling while keeping every shot grounded in the real world.
Why a car is an optical problem
Cars are among the hardest things to scan well, and the reason is optical rather than geometric.
Gloss paint returns a specular highlight that moves with the observer. Chrome reflects the surroundings instead of showing its own surface. Glass either transmits or mirrors, depending on angle. Photogrammetry depends on the same point on a surface looking the same from two directions, and on those materials it does not.
Getting usable vehicle geometry means controlling that behavior at capture — polarization, exposure management, considered camera positions, and understanding which parts of the body panel will and will not solve. It is technique, not equipment. What comes out is a picture car that matches the practical one exactly, which matters as soon as a vehicle appears practically in one shot and digitally in the next.
Rooftops and street grids from the air
A ground-based scanner describes what is around it. It cannot describe what is above it.
Aerial coverage adds the layer that a series set in a real, recognizable city needs: roof surfaces, upper facades, the spacing between blocks, and the way a neighborhood actually sits together. Flown as overlapping passes and registered against terrestrial data, it extends a street-level capture into a district.
That combined dataset is what makes wide shots and elevated angles possible without building them from scratch. Aerial photogrammetry covers the airborne half; set and location scanning covers the ground.
Understated effects need the same accuracy as spectacle
A show whose visual effects are meant to go unnoticed has a harder accuracy problem than one built around set pieces, not an easier one.
Spectacle carries its own permission. The audience knows a collapsing building is an effect and grades it on impact. A window replaced behind a dialogue scene is not supposed to be an effect at all, and the moment it is noticed it becomes the only thing in the frame.
Invisible work therefore has to be geometrically exact. The addition must occupy the correct volume, at the correct distance, occluded correctly by everything in front of it. Those are all properties of measurement.
Characters and continuity
Cast are captured as full-body scans and head scans so a digital double is available for the shots a performer cannot practically be in. Assets ship after retopology, texturing, and render-ready builds, scaled and named to the vendor’s convention.
