The Family Plan is Skydance Media’s 2023 action comedy starring Mark Wahlberg as a suburban car salesman hiding a past as a government assassin. Directed by Simon Cellan Jones and written by David Coggeshall, the film was produced with Wahlberg’s Municipal Pictures and follows his character on the run with his unsuspecting family when his secret past is exposed. Michelle Monaghan, Zoe Colletti, Van Crosby, Saïd Taghmaoui, Maggie Q, and Ciarán Hinds also star.
SCANable provided LiDAR/3D laser scans of several sets used for camera tracking and matchmoving, 3D body scans of actors used for additional VFX, and aerial photogrammetry for the film’s neighborhood and bridge scenes.
The plate does not contain the room
A matchmove artist reconstructs the camera’s real path through a real space. The plate alone does not contain that information — it contains a two-dimensional projection of it, and the solve has to infer everything else.
Give the same artist a measured point cloud of the room and the problem inverts. Instead of estimating depth from parallax, they fit the camera to geometry that is already known to be correct.
Solves land faster, hold longer, and survive the shots that would otherwise slip: long lenses, fast moves, and coverage with few trackable features. Everything placed into the shot afterward sits on the same measured floor the actors walked on.
One asset library across a production that keeps moving
A road-movie structure means locations that share almost nothing except the cast and the vehicles that carry them between them.
The risk on a shoot like that is fragmentation — each unit’s data captured to its own standard, named its own way, and delivered in its own units. Post then spends its first weeks reconciling files instead of building shots.
Treating capture as one continuous library rather than a series of unrelated jobs is what prevents it. Consistent naming, consistent scale, and consistent delivery format mean an asset scanned in week two is immediately usable in week nine.
Aerial photogrammetry over a residential footprint
A suburban neighborhood is too large for terrestrial scanning to cover economically and too irregular to model from plans. Roof geometry, tree canopy, and the true relationship between houses and streets are all visible only from above.
Aerial photogrammetric capture resolves that in a single flight plan, producing a mesh of the whole area rather than a set of disconnected ground scans.
The result gives VFX a real footprint to extend, populate, or replace — and a reliable base for set extension work where practical coverage stops at the edge of frame. Body scans of the cast feed the digital doubles used alongside it.
