The Underdoggs

The Underdoggs is Amazon MGM Studios’ 2024 sports comedy starring Snoop Dogg, released as a Prime Video exclusive on January 26, 2024. Directed by Charles Stone III and written by Danny Segal and Isaac Schamis, the film also stars Tika Sumpter, Andrew Schulz, Mike Epps, Kal Penn, Kandi Burruss, and George Lopez.

SCANable provided LiDAR/3D laser scans of several sets along with 3D body scans of actors and props used for additional VFX on the film, delivering the photogrammetry data its visual effects team needed for seamless integration.

Field sport under hard light

Sports coverage is lit hard and shot long. Bodies are in motion, frequently at distance, and the audience knows from a lifetime of watching real games exactly how athletic movement is supposed to look.

Any digital figure entering that environment is measured against genuine footage inside the same frame. Building from scanned people rather than from generic body models is what keeps proportion, mass and stance believable at the distances sports coverage actually uses — and mass is the detail that gives a generic model away first.

Photography is a deliverable, not a by-product

Scanning produces geometry, but it also produces a controlled photographic record: calibrated, evenly lit, and cross-polarized where specular response has to come off the surface.

That imagery has independent value. It becomes texture reference, color reference and continuity reference for departments that will never open a 3D file. Photometric capture is where the two outputs meet — one session yielding both measured surface and relightable texture, from the same subject at the same moment.

Venues you get for a day

A stadium, field or gym is a working facility on loan, available in a window that will not be repeated and usually cannot be extended.

Everything the post schedule will eventually need from that space has to be recorded in that one visit: full coverage, in scale, with enough overlap that registration holds end to end. Set and location scanning on this kind of production is planned backward from that constraint. What is missed is not noticed until months later, when someone needs a dimension nobody wrote down.
