Stranger Things 5 is the final season of Netflix’s beloved sci-fi horror saga, in which the Upside Down fully merges with the real world of Hawkins. With cracks splitting the town and time itself unraveling, Eleven, Mike, Will and the rest of the crew must confront Vecna in a battle that spans dimensions and memories. As secrets are revealed and past traumas resurface, the group relies on their bonds — and Eleven’s evolving powers — to close the gateway once and for all.
VFX plays a crucial role in the 2025 season, blending practical effects with cutting-edge CGI. Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and SCANable helped craft massive rift sequences, realistic particle simulations for the Upside Down’s dark matter clouds, and de-aging for flashback sequences. Digital doubles built from SCANable’s 3D scanning, volumetric environments and hybrid creature designs brought Vecna’s domain to life, while seamless digital compositing enabled breathtaking transitions between the real world and the Upside Down.
Two versions of the same place
The central visual problem of this series has always been that Hawkins exists twice — once as an ordinary town and once as its decayed mirror. Selling that requires the two versions to be dimensionally identical. If a doorway is in a slightly different place, or a ceiling runs at a different height, the audience feels the mismatch even when they cannot name it.
LiDAR set and location scanning is how a production guarantees they match. A registered point cloud is a measured record of the standing set, accurate to the millimeter, and it becomes the shared foundation that both the real and the corrupted version are built from.
That same data drives camera tracking. A matchmove solved against real measured geometry lands the first time; a matchmove solved by eye against a plate does not.
Scanning a cast that has grown up on camera
A series running across multiple years and a final season with flashback material has a particular need: the show must be able to represent its performers at more than one age.
Contemporary capture gives the VFX team an accurate present-day baseline of each actor — geometry and surface detail as they are now. De-aging work builds against that baseline rather than guessing at it. Without a current scan, an artist is reverse-engineering a face from footage, which is far harder and far less reliable.
Our Mobile CyberSCAN™ Studios deploy to the production, which is what makes capturing a large young cast practical. Performers scan between setups instead of losing a travel day, and they scan in the wardrobe and hair the episode actually calls for.
What “digital double” means on a show like this
The phrase gets used loosely. On this series it means something specific: a geometrically accurate, texture-complete replica of a performer that can be placed in a shot the human could not safely or practically be in.
Rift sequences, environments that are actively collapsing, and creature interaction all fall in that category. So does simple coverage — a wide shot where a performer needs to be present in a location that only exists as CG.
The build starts from full-body photogrammetric capture. Every camera in the array fires simultaneously, so there is no drift from a performer breathing or shifting during a sweep. The result is digital double geometry that holds up under scrutiny rather than requiring hand cleanup that erodes likeness.
Props, and the things that get destroyed
Practical props on a horror series have a habit of being ruined during production. Scanning them while they are intact produces a permanent digital record — which matters both for continuity across episodes and for any shot where the prop needs to do something a physical object cannot.
The same applies to set pieces that get struck or damaged. Once captured, the geometry outlasts the physical object entirely.
Handing off to the vendors
Scan data reaches vendors as clean, scaled, correctly oriented assets, not as raw camera output. Our in-house retopology, texturing, and asset build work happens before delivery so that a facility can drop a file straight into their pipeline.
On a show distributing work across multiple large vendors, consistent naming and consistent scale across the whole asset library is what keeps the season coherent.
