Captain America: Brave New World is Marvel Studios’ 2025 superhero film starring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson / Captain America. The fourth installment in the Captain America film series, the 35th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and a continuation of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), it was directed by Julius Onah from a script by Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, and Matthew Orton, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Mackie stars alongside Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore, Carl Lumbly, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Harrison Ford as Wilson finds himself at the center of an international incident.
SCANable provided 3D scanning services for the production, capturing performers, props, and environments as high-resolution photogrammetry and point-cloud data. These scans supported the film’s visual effects teams with digital doubles, set extensions, and camera tracking.
Scanning the whole show, not part of it
Some productions need a handful of character scans. This one needed close to the full range of what capture can deliver — performers, props, environments, backgrounds, and the tracking data that ties them together.
That breadth changes how the work is planned. Rather than a series of unrelated scanning days, the production gets a coverage plan: what needs capturing, at what fidelity, in what order, and against which shooting units.
The alternative — reacting shot by shot as VFX needs surface in post — is where productions discover that the set has already been struck and the actor’s contract has ended.
Camera tracking begins on set
Matchmove is often thought of as a post-production task. In practice its success is largely decided during the shoot, by whether the environment was measured.
A solve run against real point-cloud geometry has something true to anchor to. Every camera position resolves to a real position in a real space, and the CG that gets placed afterward sits correctly the first time. A solve run without that data is an artist inferring three-dimensional structure from a two-dimensional plate, and it will drift.
Our set and location scanning captures that measured record while the set still exists.
Set extension needs the seam to be invisible
A set extension is a lie the audience has to believe at the join. The practical build stops at the top of frame and CG continues it, which only works if the digital continuation shares the practical set’s exact geometry, scale, and perspective.
Point-cloud data provides that shared foundation. The extension is modeled outward from measured geometry, so the transition between what was built and what was rendered lands on the millimeter rather than being eyeballed.
Backgrounds work the same way. An environment reconstructed from measurement holds up when the camera moves; one painted from reference does not.
Digital doubles for a film built on flight and combat
A superhero film generates a high proportion of shots the human performer cannot safely be in. Aerial action, sustained fight choreography, and destruction sequences are all cases where the double takes over.
Those shots survive scrutiny only if the double is faithful. Our arrays fire every camera simultaneously, so there is no drift from a performer breathing or shifting mid-capture — which is what separates cyberscanning from methods that sweep or take multiple passes.
The result is digital double geometry that requires minimal hand cleanup, and hand cleanup on a face is precisely where likeness gets lost.
Delivery across a large vendor pool
A film at this scale distributes work to many facilities. Each of them needs assets that arrive scaled, oriented, and named consistently.
Our in-house modeling and asset build happens before delivery so vendors receive production-ready files rather than raw capture. The practical effect is that a facility starts working on day one instead of spending it interpreting what they were sent.
