Teacup is Peacock’s horror series created by Ian McCulloch, adapted from Robert McCammon’s novel Stinger. Set on an isolated ranch in rural Georgia, it follows a group of neighbors forced together behind a boundary they cannot cross when a mysterious threat arrives. Yvonne Strahovski and Scott Speedman star as Maggie and James Chenoweth, alongside Chaske Spencer, Boris McGiver and Kathy Baker. The series premiered on Peacock on October 10, 2024, releasing episodes in pairs through Halloween.
SCANable provided 3D scanning services for the production, capturing talent and set data in support of the series’ computer-generated visual effects and set-extension work.
Set extension is a matching problem
An extension rarely fails because the modeling is poor. It fails at the seam, where CG geometry meets the practical build and the two do not agree on a dimension.
Geometry modeled outward from a measured point cloud shares the set’s exact proportions, so the join has nothing to give away. The practical construction defines the truth and the extension inherits it, rather than the two being reconciled by eye in comp.
Contained horror depends on a believable boundary
A story about people trapped inside a perimeter puts enormous weight on the space itself. The audience has to understand how large the ranch is, where its edges sit, and what lies past them.
That understanding is spatial before it is dramatic. When the environment has been measured, whatever defines the boundary lands at a consistent distance and scale in every shot, and the geography stays legible across an episode.
Rural exteriors are harder than interiors
An interior is bounded, evenly lit and straightforward to plan coverage for. Open landscape is none of those things. It has no walls to register against, daylight that changes hour to hour, vegetation that moves, and no natural limit on how far the data needs to extend.
Set and location scanning under those conditions is closer to survey work than to studio capture: deliberate positions, controlled overlap, and enough tie geometry to hold the whole area in a single coordinate space.
Scanning ahead of the script
A series accumulates visual effects work episode by episode, and most of it is not known on the day the cast is available.
Capturing full-body and head data early gives the vendor a complete set of digital doubles to draw on later, whatever the remaining scripts turn out to require. Our Mobile CyberSCAN™ Studios go to the production, so that capture happens between setups rather than on a separate travel day.
